The Great Migration is a year-round circular movement of over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelles between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara. It follows the rains rather than the calendar, so exact timing varies every year.
Typical timing in the Masai Mara
The herds usually arrive in the Mara from July, with dramatic Mara River crossings most commonly seen between August and September. By October many are heading back south.
What if you travel outside those months?
The Mara is wonderful all year: resident lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants are present in every season, and the green months bring quiet roads and newborn animals.
Our advice
If crossings are your priority, book early and allow at least three days in the Mara to improve your chances. Tell us your dates and we'll suggest the best camps for your style of travel.
